Woodworks

Having established a reputation for innovative, high-caliber performances, Saint Mary's College Ensemble-in-residence, Claricello, blasts into the Fall with a dynamic set of concerts for their third season of the ÒClaricello and Friends Concert Series. Sponsored by Saint Mary's College Department of Music, the first concert of the series entitled 'Woodworks" takes place September 20, 2007 at 7:30pm in the Little Theatre, Moreau Center for the Arts on the campus of Saint Mary's College.

The program features a creative variety of clarinet and bass clarinet works performed by Claricello's Jason Gresl and guest pianist Jennifer Muniz. The concert opens with a dramatic duo by French composer Semler-Collery. The performance continues with a later French composer, Martinu, whose music embodies a light "joie d'vivre" found in much French music and culture at the beginning of the 20th century. The first piece written for bass clarinet as a solo intrument is a soulful Lied that begins the second half of the concert and the colorful feast concludes with Prokofiev's Sonata Op. 94. This sonata was originally written for flute yet quickly became a staple in the violin repertoire. The brilliant blend of melody and bravura is well suited to the clarinet.

In 1998, Lara Turner and Jason Gresl formed Claricello to explore the sonic and musical possibilities of clarinet and cello in an interactive format that engages audiences and blends multidisciplinary elements into the performance.   Currently Instrumental Ensemble-in-Residence at Saint Mary's College, Claricello continues taking advantage of a variety of concert opportunities, performing contemporary classical works as well as their own arrangements.   Claricello has been featured on the Pendulum New Music Series in Boulder, Colorado and are regular guests at the Loon Lake Live! Chamber Music Festival in Upstate New York.   In 2004 they were resident artists at the Banff Centre's Chamber Music Program and recently were guest performers at the first World Bass Clarinet Convention in Rotterdam, Netherlands.   Currently, Lara Turner holds the position of Principal Cello with the South Bend Symphony, and in addition to teaching at Saint Mary's, maintains a private teaching studio.   Jason teaches privately as well as at Saint Mary's and Andrews University, and is the Education Programs Coordinator for the South Bend Symphony.
